Starting from Heraklion and travelling 49 km at 630 meters altitude, we make our first stop at the Monastery of Kera Karkadiotissa.

A stolen miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary which is now in Rome and the monastery itself that was built somewhere between 961 and 1204, add mystery and stories to the Monastery.

The story of the resistance is full of legends from the period of Ottoman rule, waiting for the visitor to discover them.

Our second stop is at 1049 meters altitude in the cave of Psychro, a place of worship in the first Minoan years. Legend has it that Jupiter was born here. Today visitors come from all over the world to discover the rare beauty of the cave and its history.
Next stop is at the Windmills on Lassithi plateau. Thousands of windmills were used on the plateau, contributing to the flour industry and agriculture, creating a unique landscape of beauty.

Even today they are the trademark of the Plateau and one of the most beautiful places in Crete that you can visit.

After leaving the Plateau and travelling a little further south, we visit the village of Krasi. The plane tree in the central square of the village has been declared a national monument and is one of the 5 oldest trees in Europe.

It is said that it is over 1000 years old and Krasi used to be the favourite place of N. Kazantzakis and other Cretan writers such as Varnalis and Avgeris. A stop at the traditional Cretan taverns, will fill you with unique flavors of traditional food and homemade sweets.

Last stop before returning to Heraklion is to Agios Nikolaos, the capital city of Lassithi. It is built around Lake Voulismeni, a lagoon with many ancient and urban myths.

Ancient myths say that Athena and Artemis bathed in the lake. Urban legends associated with the lake say that it has no bottom and that it is connected to the volcano of Santorini.

You can discuss and analyze these myths while having your drink or coffee in one of the cafes around the Lake.
